WHAT ARE DRUGS?

Any substance – gas, solid, liquid – we use to change the way we feel physically and/or emotionally and mentally.

‘Drugs' means legal drugs as much as illegal drugs. The terms ‘legal' and ‘illegal' may say more about what society thinks of a drug, than about the potential harms that may be attached to the use of that drug.

Examples of some legal and illegal drugs:

LEGAL –

Alcohol, Nicotine (tobacco), Caffeine (tea & coffee), Tranquillisers, Painkillers

ILLEGAL –

Cannabis/marijuana, Heroin, Ecstasy, Amphetamines ‘speed', Cocaine, LSD

(sourced from Australian Drug Foundation 2001)
