FAMILIES & FRIENDS

If you are worried about the drinking or drug use of someone close to you – a family member or a friend or a work colleague – then it is definitely already a problem, because their drinking or drug use is affecting YOU. So whether they think it is a problem or not, to them, you can get help for yourself first. Information, support, someone safe to talk with – a counsellor or a self help support group (remember this could be by phone or online, if face to face is difficult) - for YOU, is essential for making clear, healthy boundaries. This can reduce the harm to you, which in turn can lead to improvement for everyone involved. No one benefits by you being sick with worry, or wild with rage, or down with confusion and depression. Shame and secrecy keep you feeling isolated, helpless, and hopeless. Blame and anger are just as painful, keeping you stuck and hurt.

Parents

Some suggestions (from Australian Drug Foundation 2001 – Communities Offering Drug Education)

Parenting Strategies

  • Think about and be aware of your own use of drugs, both currently and in the past
  • Provide a good role model. Children are exposed to alcohol and tobacco at an early age, usually when their family drink or smoke. If a child sees a parent drinking or smoking a lot, they will see it as the norm.
  • Listen and talk with your children. Let your children know you will be around to listen.
  • Be informed. Be prepared to talk about drug issues openly and honestly. Find out some facts in advance.

Suspicion of Drug Use

•  Don't make assumptions

•  Unusual behaviour = a problem that may or may not involve drugs
